TPO Uganda exhibits at Parliament mental health camp – May 22nd -23rd

TPO Uganda joined other partners under the stewardship of the Parliamentary Forum on Mental Health and the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Technical Working Group for a two-day Mental Health Camp.

The mental health camp attracted legislators and several high-level participants including the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among who officiated at the event. The Speaker called for a country-wide resolve of mental disorders whose rate is reported to be on rise. She made reference to the recent spike in gun crime by security personnel in both the regular forces and private companies which has resulted in several deaths by shooting.

“With all these issues, we need to make sure that people are screened for mental health given the rising cases of depression, poverty, unemployment, stress, drug addiction and alcohol,” said Speaker Among.

TPO Uganda, represented by Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatric Clinic Officer and Communication and Documentation Manager made a case for increased involvement of key stakeholders in policy formulation and implementation. This was in addition to provision of free mental health education and basic professional assessment to the legislators and the general public.
