TPO Uganda Champions Mental Health at 2025 Camp, Conference

As part of its ongoing commitment to mental health awareness and care, TPO Uganda actively participated in two major national events this May: a three-day Mental Health Camp at the Parliamentary Gardens and the 4th Uganda National Mental Health Conference held from May 27–29 at Hotel Africana in Kampala. Organized under the theme “Building Resilient Communities: The Future of Mental Health in Uganda,” the conference brought together mental health professionals, government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to share knowledge, innovations, and strategies for improving mental health care in Uganda.

TPO Uganda, a co-sponsor of the event, was represented by a multidisciplinary team led by Country Director Peter Okwi, who reaffirmed the organization’s mission to expand access to mental health support. “This conference is more than a gathering — it’s a reflection of our collective commitment to ensure mental health becomes a national priority,” said Peter Okwi. “At TPO Uganda, we believe building resilient communities means making mental health services accessible, inclusive, and community-driven.”

A key highlight of the conference was a session on teletherapy, which showcased how technology is enhancing access to mental health services, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Earlier in the month of May, TPO Uganda also joined Uganda National Mental Health and Psychosocial Technical Working Group and the Ministry of Health for the Mental Health Camp at the Parliamentary Gardens. The event raised awareness among Members of Parliament and the public about the importance of mental wellbeing.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among encouraged MPs to take the lead in prioritizing mental health for themselves and their constituents. Through its participation, TPO Uganda continues to champion community-based mental health services, working closely with partners to reach the most vulnerable and strengthen Uganda’s mental health system.
